  • Duveneck does not provide supervision for students, including *kindergarteners, between their dismissal time and the start of class.

In Creative Architecture, children will learn & practice elements of structural design.  They’ll build three dimensional structures & buildings using a wide range of materials (including clay, wood blocks, cardboards, foam boards, discarded material, etc.). They’ll learn how architects combine functional needs for a building with designs that excite their imaginations.  In this introduction to the discipline of architecture, they’ll identify needs, frame problems, work collaboratively, explore and appreciate the contexts within which a solution must work, weigh alternatives, and communicate their ideas verbally, graphically, and in three dimensions.

Bay Area Chess combines fun and learning while promoting a team spirit where everyone helps each other succeed and improve. Our chess program will cover the very basics for new students to the game and we can challenge experienced players with more advanced concepts. Students will have the opportunity to learn the moves of the pieces, opening strategy, tactics, checkmates and endgame play. Students will also learn valuable life skills through chess, such as winning and losing with grace, sportsmanship, planning and team spirit. Our mission is to transform and enrich the lives of students through chess.

All students in grades 2-5 are welcome to join the fun new Duveneck Chorus.  Open to beginning and experienced students.  Students will learn musicianship skills, singing in multiple parts, following a conductor, music reading  skills, and they will get to have fun making music with their schoolmates!  We will be singing folk songs, popular/movie music, and some classic choral repertoire.

Hip Hop

The Duveneck Hip Hop Dance class is open to students in Grades K-3.  Dance uplifts, unites, and empowers children.  It also provides children with an opportunity to express their individuality while working on gross motor skills and developing cognitive and social skills.  Hip Hop is the perfect class for children who want to dance, stay active, and learn how to freestyle!  Musicality, rhythm, and creative movement are key components of this fun, urban/street-style dance class that teaches boys and girls alike to step, stomp, and shake it out.

Electrical Engineering is a hands-on, project based class where kids learn how electricity works and how it is used in the real world. Kids engage in project based learning activities where they explore static electricity, voltage, resistance, circuits, batteries, conductors and insulators, and electromagnetism. They will bend water with static electricity, make a battery, build a flashlight, and make and test circuits in series and parallel. They will build an electric motor and make their own electromagnet, a telegraph, a radio and an electric toy. Advanced topics include an introduction to resistors, capacitors, transistors, breadboard, multimeter and measuring electricity.

We designed our program to introduce all of the same basics fundamentals and skills while providing a safe and active learning environment to grow in the sport. Starbrite Math (K-2)
Students grades K-2 explore a world of fun, creative mathematics. They develop number sense and learn arithmetic, data gathering, data handling and data measurement, among other skills through number talks, challenge problems, brain teasers, logic puzzles and math games. They learn through the process of solving problems which is both challenging and rewarding; requiring creativity, logic, deep thinking, collaboration, and grit.
Galaxy Math (3-5)
Galaxy Math is for motivated and curious students grades 3-6 who have a real interest in mathematics. They will discover, explore, and make connections between mathematical concepts preparing them for advanced level math, college and beyond. Students in this class learn math that is the most important for success in the 21st century: arithmetic, fractions, rates, ratios, proportions, data analysis and linear equations. Learning takes place through number talks, challenge problems, brain teasers, logic puzzles and math games. They learn through the process of solving problems which is both challenging and rewarding; requiring creativity, logic, deep thinking, collaboration, and grit.

Duveneck Piano Group is open to students in grades K-3.  Learn piano in a fun social group atmosphere! Group piano class provides students an excellent introduction to the keyboard and prepares them for more serious private study as well as playing in a band/ensemble. Most importantly, students will begin to develop the skill of playing music with their peers which provides a lifelong benefit.  Our teachers focus on developing the students’ core keyboard skills: hand position, note-reading, chord vocabulary, rhythm, and theory while rehearsing a repertoire of rock, pop, and classical songs. Our instructors bring a classroom set of battery-operated keyboards with them to every class for the kids to use and we highly recommend that students also have a keyboard at home to practice.

The Duveneck Uke Group is open to students in grades K-3.  The uke is an excellent instrument on which to learn how to play MusicIt's relatively simple to learn, easy to tote around, inexpensive, super fun, and timelessly popular!  In this ensemble, we will jump right into the fun stuff and learn how to play music on the ukulele. By the end of the course, students will know a few chord positions, will be able to play a couple of songs on the ukulele, and be able to sing along. Our instructors bring a classroom set of ukuleles with them to every class for the kids to use and we highly recommend that students also have a ukulele at home to practice.

Creative Photography: Kids are never too young to enjoy photography. This course is designed to stimulate kids’ imagination and creativity. Students discover a new perspective on life through photography while simultaneously becoming familiar with the camera and various composition techniques. Through playful activities, this class enables children to create narratives from their photographs and illustrate their ideas through the digital image.  All materials and equipment including cameras and tripods will be provided by us.

Minecraft Challenges (3-5) and Minecraft Rally (1-3): All NEW worlds, all-new adventures - perfect for new or continuing Sparkiverse students! We're bringing social interaction to Minecraft - and weaving in lots of fun and healthy competition. We ensure that students don’t simply sit on a computer alone. Rather, they work together with the other Minecrafters and learn teamwork, collaboration, and digital citizenship.  Coding with Scratch (3-5):  Coding meets the real world with video game building! Students explore game fundamentals and mechanics as they design their own characters and create their own games using the kid-friendly Scratch platform. They will build several games including their own rendition of the Chrome Dino Game (error 404 game) and Flappy Bird.

Duveneck Yoga+Mindfulness is open to the lower campus grades K-3.  This exciting and fun-loving yoga class for children offers an introduction to basic breathing, yoga postures, mindfulness techniques and relaxation to support the development of strength and flexibility in their mind and body. Students will learn the value of stillness and movement by engaging in playful activities to promote self awareness and improved social interactions with others.
